Leader of Farc’s 37th front killed in bombing raid. On 6 June Colombian authorities confirmed that ‘El Francés’ (Luis Enrique Benítez Cañola), the leader of the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc)’s 37th front, had been killed during an air bombing raid in the department of Antioquia earlier in the day. Benítez Cañola, 53, had been in the Farc for 33 years and currently served as the link between the Caribbean and Magdalena blocs, was in charge of the 37th and 35th fronts’ finances and had several pending arrest warrants in relation to charges of rebellion, conspiracy to commit a crime, narco-trafficking and kidnapping. Another eight members of the Farc also died in the raid and a further three were captured.
