COLOMBIA: Uribe's support surges on Betancourt rescue

A total of 77% of Colombians would support a bid by President Alvaro Uribe to seek a third term, according to a poll released this week in the wake of the military rescue of 15 hostages, including French-Colombian politician Ingrid Betancourt, from the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc). Betancourt said Uribe should be entitled to run again if that was what the electorate wanted. The constitutional court, unsurprisingly, opted not to try and swim against this tide of popularity and announced that it would not investigate the legality of the 2006 elections won by Uribe as requested by the supreme court last week [WR-08-26].
