ECUADOR: Constituent assembly enhances executive power

The constituent assembly looks set to complete a draft constitution by 26 July after accelerating the approval of individual articles since Fernando Cordero took over at the helm in the wake of Alberto Acosta's resignation. Several of the more contentious articles were approved this week, including re-election, for one term only; awarding the president the power to dissolve congress; and approving recall referendums which could be used to revoke the mandate of the president or other elected officials.
