Juan Carlos Varela will be the presidential candidate of the main
opposition Partido Panameñista (PP) in elections on 3 May 2009 after winning the
party primary elections on 6 July. Varela, the PP party president whose family
control the liquor distilling business, Hermanos Varela, beat Alberto Vallarino,
a prominent banker and frontrunner in the polls, by more than 20 percentage
points. Varela served as Vallarino's campaign coordinator in 1998 when he was
defeated by Mireya Moscoso, who went on to win the presidential elections.
