PANAMA: Varela clinches victory in PP primaries

Juan Carlos Varela will be the presidential candidate of the main opposition Partido Panameñista (PP) in elections on 3 May 2009 after winning the party primary elections on 6 July. Varela, the PP party president whose family control the liquor distilling business, Hermanos Varela, beat Alberto Vallarino, a prominent banker and frontrunner in the polls, by more than 20 percentage points. Varela served as Vallarino's campaign coordinator in 1998 when he was defeated by Mireya Moscoso, who went on to win the presidential elections.
