Montesinos damages Fujimorismo in Peru

His testimony was eagerly awaited. Eight years after former president Alberto Fujimori and his shadowy security chief Vladimiro Montesinos fled the country, Peruvians expected remarkable revelations when Montesinos took to the stand in Fujimori's trial on human rights abuses last week. His performance was indeed remarkable but not for the revelations. Instead, Montesinos denied that Fujimori had any responsibility for rights violations during his government. Rather than buttressing Fujimori, Montesinos' support damaged his credibility and, in the process, any revival of Fujimorismo.
