Violence over Colquiri mine in Bolivia. On 14 June clashes took place at the site of the Colquiri mine, La Paz, between members of the salaried mining workers union, Federación Sindical de Trabajadores Mineros de Bolivia (FSTMB) and the national confederation of mining cooperatives (Fencomin). According to Alfredo Mamani, the leader of one of the cooperatives, Cooperativa 26 de Febrero, the violence left 15 people injured and one dead – although this has yet to be confirmed by the government. The violence follows the refusal of the FSTMB to accept the recent deal struck between the government and Fencomin over the proposed nationalisation of the mine which is controlled by Sinchi Wayra, a subsidiary of
Switzerland’s Glencore. While the FSTMB wants the whole site to be nationalised, the government only agreed to nationalise the deposit conceded to Glencore and to respect the areas currently being developed by the mining cooperatives. It also agreed to handover an additional vein (Rosario) for the cooperatives to exploit.
