DOMINICAN REPUBLIC-HAITI |
Bilateral relations under strain. A new migration law passed by the Dominican Republic, which took effect on 1 June, has placed new strains on bilateral ties with Haiti, a relationship which, while historically tense, improved in the aftermath of the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti in light of Dominican cooperation. The new law requires non-Dominican workers to have a work permit that can be obtained upon presentation of a valid passport, a visa, a birth certificate, a medical certificate and a criminal background check, at an estimated total cost of around US$800, although it fails to specify whether foreign workers or local employers should foot the bill.
