PARAGUAY: Heads roll as land conflict boils over

President Fernando Lugo has dismissed both his interior minister and the head of police after a police operation to evict 150 landless farming families from an estate in the north-eastern department of Canindeyú led to one of the worst losses of life in a single incident in the long history of Paraguay’s land conflict. At least 17 people are believed to have died in a gunfight after 300 members of the police moved into the Morumbí estate on 15 June.
