Mining projects across Latin America have been confronted by an unprecedented wave of social unrest that in several cases have rattled governments. People living close to mining areas, indigenous communities and peasants, with the support of environmentalists, have reacted to the perceived threat of irreparable damage to the environment and what is seen as a lack of transparency in the proceedings of mining companies and governments. The latter two claim that they are being misrepresented, and some governments have alleged that the unrest is being fostered by hidden political interests.
