In several countries, anti-mining protesters have been accused of being politically motivated, influenced by interfering foreign interests and intent on destabilising governments. The protesters portray themselves as members of communities affected by, or potentially at risk from, the impact of mining on their environment. In fact, there have been spontaneous protest movements, but these have been encouraged and given organisational assistance by groups set up specifically for that purpose, some of which have coalesced in national and international networks. It is also clear that there is a political dimension to the protest movement, though well short of a bid for overarching power.
