EL SALVADOR: The first 100 days of the gang truce

According to the national police (PNC) between 8 March, when the truce between the Mara Salvatrucha and La 18 came into effect, and 18 June there were 603 homicides or 49.4% fewer than in the same period of 2011. As put by Justice & Public Security Minister David Munguía Payés, the daily average of homicides has fallen in this period from 14 to five. This has made an impact on the overall figure for homicides since the beginning of the year: it reached 1,510, or 23.7% less than in the comparable period of last year.
