VENEZUELA: Capriles battered by Bolivarian hurricane

It is a moot point whether electoral campaigning ever really stops in Venezuela but it officially got underway on 1 July ahead of October’s presidential elections. “The Bolivarian Hurricane is off!” President Hugo Chávez declared. His rival, Henrique Capriles Radonski, of the opposition Mesa de la Unidad Democrática (MUD), is adamant he will not be swept off course, promising “a hurricane of progress” in response, but his campaign team is already concerned that he will be unable to weather the saturation coverage of Chávez in the state media, about which the MUD has filed a complaint before the national electoral council (CNE).
