PRI and PRD share state spoils

The seven gubernatorial elections held on 1 July were an unmitigated disaster for the Partido de Acción Nacional (PAN), which barely clung on to its bastion of Guanajuato. The Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI)-Partido Verde Ecologista de México (PVEM) alliance registered some notable successes but these were at least matched, if not surpassed, by the left-wing coalition led by the Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD).
