The Caribbean Community (Caricom) is locked in an existential crisis from which it is struggling to emerge. There were other issues on the agenda of the annual summit of the 15-member regional entity, which took place last week in Saint Lucia, but they were overshadowed by the now-familiar concerns about its future. These were given new potency by the release of the full findings of a long-awaited report on the Caricom Secretariat, excerpts of which were advanced in March, together with talk in Jamaica of pulling out of the trading bloc altogether amid disgruntlement over trade imbalances.
