EL SALVADOR: Gold mining dispute ensnares Funes

The stage is set for a legal tussle between the government of President Mauricio Funes and the Canadian gold mining company Pacific Rim. Funes made a campaign promise in 2009 that he would not permit mining in El Salvador because the potential health and environmental risks outweighed the benefits for a small country. Pacific Rim is seeking multi-million-dollar compensation.
