In Brief - Dominican Republic

Dominican Republic| Anti-drug trafficking agreement signed with Mexico. On 13 August the prosecutor generals of Mexico and the Dominican Republic, Marisela Morales Ibáñez and Radhamés Jimémez Peña respectively, signed a new anti-drug trafficking and anti-crime cooperation agreement in Santo Domingo. The new agreement will cover cooperation in investigations and judicial proceedings on crimes related to terrorism, organised crime and other related crimes. It also calls for the exchange of information and experience in cases involving corruption, people and drug trafficking and money laundering. Morales and Jiménez Peña said that “currently the Dominican Republic and Mexico are immersed in an unprecedented fight against transnational organised crime… and that is why we have decided to coordinate the application of public policies that will add our efforts to that of other countries in order to avoid such crimes from crossing our borders”. Mexico was put in charge of setting up a new Inter-American security system after the last Organization of American States (OAS) summit held in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, in April. Since then, Morales has visited Peru, Ecuador and Colombia, where she has signed similar agreements.
