Sendero Luminoso sighting in Huancavelica region. On 14 August the Peruvian press reported that a group of 35 armed people, believed to be members of the Sendero Luminoso (SL) insurgent group, entered the town of Aucapiñan in the Colcabamba district, Huancavelica region, where they held a rally. Press reports highlight that the group hung flags and distributed revolutionary material in an attempt to rally the local community to their cause. The area in which the incident took place has been identified by the authorities as a possible drug-trafficking route but SL presence had never been recorded, much less acts of this kind. A Peruvian military commando group from the nearby Villa Sur military base has already arrived in Aucapiñan to reinforce security in the area.
