Thousands of Colombian coffee growers poured onto the streets of Manizales, the capital of Caldas, on 13 August to ask the government of President Juan Manuel Santos to purchase their crops at much higher prices than normal in order to alleviate the economic hardship triggered by one of the worst harvests in recent times.
