On 24 July Cementos Lima, Peru’s largest cement maker, formally announced its merger with Cemento Andino, another player in the local market, to create Unión Andina de Cementos. The merger is an attempt by Cementos Lima to remain the leading cement provider in Peru, which is enjoying a construction boom on the back of its strong economic performance in recent years. The merger comes as Latin America’s cement producing giant, Mexico’s Cemex, has set its eyes on expanding its presence in the Peruvian market. While the birth of Unión Andina de Cementos may give Peru its own cement industry champion, whether it will be able to compete with the highly successful Cemex remains to be seen.
