With just over two months until municipal elections on 4 November, manoeuvring by the different parties is well underway. Bar the dissident Movimiento de Renovaciόn Sandinista (MRS), the opposition has confirmed it will compete despite threats to boycott the process given transparency concerns. The hitherto failure of the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government of President Daniel Ortega to enact key recommendations by electoral observer missions following the 6 November 2011 general elections - such as the overhaul of the highly discredited electoral authorities (CSE) - suggests little improvement on last year’s controversial vote.
