Juan Carlos Navarro has won a key battle. Last week the former Panama City mayor was picked by the opposition Partido Revolucionario Democrático (PRD) as its secretary general – a post widely considered a stepping stone to the party’s presidential nomination (ahead of the next general elections in 2014). His victory signals a defeat for the party’s old guard, which includes heavyweights such as the PRD’s presidential candidate in the 2009 election, Balbina Herrera and former president Martín Torrijos (2004-2009) and suggests an overhaul of the party which, traditionally Panama’s biggest, was badly damaged in the 2009 general election.
