Latest production data add to confusion

The UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the US government have produced data filling one gap in their recent reports on coca and cocaine production in Latin America [SSR-12-07] —that regarding Colombia’s performance in 2011. The UNODC reports the first increase in Colombian coca production since 2007 and a slight dip in potential cocaine production, while the US says nothing about coca production but reports a substantial decline in potential cocaine production, portraying Colombia as producing less than either Peru or Bolivia. This has raised many eyebrows and has highlighted the need for a common methodology and more up-to-date reporting.
