BRAZIL: PT moves into damage control

The dreaded moment of truth has arrived for Brazil’s ruling Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT). Eight of 10 supreme court justices this week voted to charge the PT Federal Deputy João Paulo Cunha with passive corruption and the misuse of public money in the mensalão trial (an alleged congressional bribery scheme dating to 2003). The supreme court president, Carlos Ayres Britto, was due to vote as we went to press on 30 August.
