President Federico Franco has appointed air force commander General Miguel Christ Jacobs as commander of the armed forces. Christ, who replaces army General Felipe Melgarejo, was next in line for the post on the basis of seniority, but this has not always been rigidly adhered to in the past and his appointment looks like a reward for his ‘loyalty’ to Franco when he was sworn in to replace his impeached predecessor, Fernando Lugo, on 22 June.
