CHILE: Piñera claims pyrrhic victory
The government led by President Sebastián Piñera has successfully managed to get its proposed tax reform bill through congress. This is undoubtedly a political victory for the Piñera administration. Yet approval for the reform only came after a long and hard political battle that has taken its toll, prompting concerns that in securing this victory President Piñera and the ruling Coalición por el Cambio have delivered a fresh body blow to the political system ahead of October’s municipal elections.
