President Federico Franco has taken the bold decision to open the way for the use of genetically modified (GM) crops in Paraguay by approving the use of GM cotton seeds in the country. His impeached predecessor Fernando Lugo (2008-2012) dallied over the decision as he considered the concerns presented by peasant farmers, who he counted among his core supporters. Franco has shown that he is more decisive, but he has laid himself open to criticism not only from the peasant farmers, but also from other social and environmental groups, at a time when his administration is still looking to consolidate itself.
