To the astonishment of his rival contenders, Celso Russomano of the Partido Republicano Brasileiro (PRB) is leading the race for this year’s mayoral election in São Paulo, Brazil’s largest and most politically sought-after electoral district. The Russomano phenomenon is not isolated – polls in several of Brazil’s big cities indicate a desire for change, suggesting not only exhaustion with incumbent leaderships but also, perhaps, that President Dilma Rousseff’s busy houseclean against official corruption in Brasília is having a more profound effect than even she herself envisaged when the ‘faxina’ was effectively forced upon her within months of taking office. Ironically, the federally-ruling Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) is a victim of these shifting winds.
