TRACKING TRENDS

CUBA | Census causes controversy. Cuban authorities began a national census of population and housing at the weekend with the aim of updating figures on demographics such as gender, age, disabilities, regional distribution, type of housing, access to basic services and employment status. The census, which will be concluded on 24 September, is being carried out by 55,000 student “enumerators”, going door-to-door; it will be analysed by 16,000 experts, who will release the results next year. Cuba’s aging population was raised as a cause for concern at the April 2011 congress of the Partido Comunista, without any trace of irony given the prevailing gerontocracy.
