Deep water port project arouses interest. On 17 September President José Mujica’s economic adviser, Pedro Buonomo, revealed that some 40 firms from Latin America, Europe and Asia had expressed their interest in participating in the construction of a deep water port in Uruguay’s Rocha department, which borders Brazil. In the pipeline for years, this has been touted as the most important infrastructure project in the country in the last decade. Buonomo, who was put in charge of an inter-ministerial commission looking to promote the project, said that the commission (comprised of the ministries of transport & public works, economy & finance, housing, environment, industry, energy & mining and defence) had organised an information exchange meeting with interested parties in which companies from Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, China, Spain, the US, France, Greece, Holland, Italy, Venezuela and Uruguay participated.
