HAITI: Martelly stands tall as tyres burn

“Haiti…has understood that only a real democracy can produce stability,” President Michel Martelly said during his appearance before the United Nations General Assembly on 26 September. His assertion came just days after several hundred people took to the streets of the second city of Cap-Haïtien, burning tyres to protest against the sharp rise in the cost of staples such as rice and wheat, and perceived government corruption.
