MEXICO: Counting the unknown dead

Critics of the tallies by the government of President Felipe Calderón of drug-war fatalities, and particularly of its ‘collateral’ deaths, have often pointed out that the count leaves out the large numbers of dead who have not been identified, nor had the cause of their demise classified. The national statistical institute, Inegi, has come up with one huge figure and the federal chief procurator’s office, the PGR, has been cited as having an even higher one — but both may be falling short of the mark.
