In Brief – Argentina

POLITICS | Pressure builds on Fernández. On 10 October Argentina’s main trade unions, the dissident faction of the general confederation of labour (CGT) and the central workers’ union (CTA), led by Hugo Moyano and Pablo Micheli respectively, held a demonstration outside the presidential palace (Casa Rosada) to protest against various policies of the government led by President Cristina Fernández. The union leaders put the turnout at 80,000, though the police put it lower, at 20,000-30,000. Also present was the Argentine agricultural federation (FAA), the federation of universities (FUA) and the train workers union, Unión Ferroviaria.
