Panetta urges region not to use military as police
Belize: On 6 October, the New York-based company, American Sugar Refining (ASR), the world’s largest cane sugar refining company, became the majority shareholder in Belize Sugar Industries (BSI), the largest global supplier of Fair Trade approved sugar. The remaining shares in the company were retained by previous shareholders, including BSI Employee Holdings Limited. BSI owns the only sugar mill in Belize, which crushed over 1.0m tons of sugar cane and produced 114,000 tons of sugar in its latest harvest. The company, which directly employs nearly 500 people and farms 4,000 acres of cane, also processes cane supplied by 6,000 independent growers, who farm roughly 55,000 acres. Together, BSI and its independent contract farmers are the largest employers in Belize.
