ARGENTINA: All roads lead to Clarín

Argentina’s media war is back. And what better place to re-ignite the debate than on television? In late September, the government led by President Cristina Fernández aired a four-and-a-half minute long advertisement during ‘Fútbol Para Todos’ a national football league broadcast, announcing a state tender on 7 December (“7D”) for an (as yet undetermined) number of broadcast licenses currently owned by Grupo Clarín, the largest media group in the country. The tender falls under the auspices of the controversial new media law, which requires the likes of Clarin to divest itself of some of its assets. The government announcement featured not only on ‘Fútbol Para Todos’. It also appeared during the yearly pilgrimage to the Virgin of Luján, at which pro-government youths distributed flyers about 7D. Bizarrely, the justice minister Julio Alak then also cited 7D it as a potential reason for the (short-lived) kidnapping of a key witness in a murder related to union violence.
