ECUADOR: Key change at the top in police force

President Rafael Correa has appointed General Rodrigo Suárez as the new commander of the police force. This is a pivotal position in Ecuador, even more so from the political perspective than from the point of view of citizen security. Correa has retained a residual distrust of the police force ever since he was briefly sequestered in a military hospital on 30 September 2010 during a police mutiny over salaries and had to be rescued by special forces. The Correa administration has sought without success to prove that this was part of a coup plot.
