Rousseff vetoes forestry code. On 18 October President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil vetoed parts of the new forestry code that was approved by the Brazilian congress on 25 April. In an official statement, the decision was described as an attempt to reintroduce tougher restrictions on the amount of forest that may be felled by landowners in order to “maintain the balance between environmental and social requirements”. The text approved by congress requires landowners of medium-sized estates to preserve an area of forested lands 15 metres (m) on either side of rivers passing through their lands, an amount which increases to 20m for larger properties. The Rousseff administration is seeking to increase these limits to 20m and 30m respectively.
