Mensalão trial moves closer to an end

Development: On 18 October as the long-running Mensalão corruption case currently before Brazil’s supreme court entered its final stage, Chief Justice Joaquim Barbosa said that in his opinion, the corruption scheme unveiled in 2005 was the work of a well-structured gang led by the former minister of the presidency, José Dirceu (2003-2005), and requested that all defendants be charged with illicit association in addition to the charges of active corruption.
