POLITICS | Mujica sanctions abortion decriminalisation law. On 22 October President José Mujica of Uruguay sanctioned the law decriminalising abortions under certain circumstances, which had been approved by congress last week. In a recent interview with the Mexican daily El Universal, Mujica said he understands those who oppose the measure, stating: "From the point of view of principles themselves, it may be considered reprehensible, but from the point of view of historical practice, of what happens, I think many more lives are saved. And that is why I lean towards this standard. Now, people who think otherwise have very profound and moving reasons for doing so. This is not a trivial discussion."
