BRAZIL: Government unveils new protection measures

The government has announced new measures to protect the environment. It will create a new special force to monitor the environment, and rechart the Amazon, which it hopes will allow for the sustainable development of the region. This followed the creation of an international fund to help finance the preservation of the Amazon rainforest. Efforts are undermined, however, by the fact that the government is not fully dispersing royalties from the state-controlled energy company, Petrobras, which were meant for environmental projects.
