PANAMA: Martinelli performs another U-turn

President Ricardo Martinelli’s continual flip-flopping on unpopular initiatives is fast becoming a defining feature of his government. A law (72), which would sell off state lands in the Colón Free Trade Zone (FTZ), has forced the latest reversal from Martinelli, who was forced to back down after protests resulted in three dead amid clashes with the police. Aside from reigniting concerns regarding police brutality and questions regarding his political judgment, Martinelli’s latest failed attempt at boosting state coffers has fanned existing doubts regarding government spending, which already emerged over his proposal in June to sell government shares in the telecoms and energy sectors [RC-12-07].
