The regional isolation of Paraguay is proving every bit as contentious as the reason for it in the first place - the impeachment of President Fernando Lugo (2008-2012) last June. John Biehl, the Chilean heading the Organization of American States (OAS) mission to Paraguay, said last week during a meeting with Paraguayan electoral authorities that the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) and the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) needed to welcome Paraguay back into the fold as soon as possible. He also strongly implied that there were ulterior motives for Paraguay’s suspension from these bodies.
