President Tony Saca “warned" the nation last week that the left-wing
opposition Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN), intends to
dissolve the armed forces if the party's candidate, Mauricio Funes, comes to
power in presidential elections next March. Funes denies any such intention.
Senior figures in the FMLN accused Saca and the candidate for the ruling Alianza
Republicana Nacionalista (Arena), Rodrigo Avila, of resorting to scare tactics
because of unfavourable opinion polls. If so, they seem to be working. Avila is
clawing back the advantage Funes has amassed ever since being nominated as the
