BOLIVIA: Mining unrest masks deeper complexities

In late September President Evo Morales hailed a deal struck between two groups of miners - salaried workers and those from cooperatives (cooperativistas) - who had clashed over the development of the zinc/tin Colquiri mine in the La Paz region. Local commentators warn that the tensions between the different groups of miners laid bare by the dispute could well resurface with the Morales government’s efforts to pass new mining legislation.
