To judge from the buildup, the X Conference of Defence Ministers of the Americas was going to be, for practical purposes, the last. The governments of at least four Latin American countries had given notice of their intent to call for the denunciation of the Rio Treaty and even more called for an overhaul of the Inter-American Defence System created during the Cold War. This did not figure among the results of the meeting. Indeed, nothing other than the reiteration of past agreements commanded the support of all participants. At most, the meeting pointed to new sets of alignments.
