“The start of a new history of recovering Nicaragua’s sovereignty”. This is how Nicaragua’s First Lady Rosario Murillo described this week’s ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague on the 122-year old maritime and territorial dispute between Nicaragua and Colombia. While confirming Colombia’s sovereignty over seven islets in Caribbean waters, the ruling, which has been 11 years coming, ordered Colombia to cede a significant amount of its maritime territory to Nicaragua, potentially granting it access to underwater oil and gas deposits as well as fishing rights. Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos rejected the ruling (which is binding and takes effect immediately), putting paid to hopes for an end to what has been a long-running source of bilateral tension.
