A year after President Daniel Ortega’s decisive and controversial re-election, his Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) has once again swept the board – this time in the 4 November municipal vote. As in 2011, which saw Ortega re-elected with 62% of the vote, the latest elections have been marred by allegations of fraud, deadly violence and civil society concerns regarding the credibility of the electoral process. Ortega’s stronghold over the country’s institutions and the international community’s failure to follow up on any complaints suggests that as before, the results will stand.
