The race for the presidency, which culminates on 21 April next year, is well and truly underway with all the main political parties holding primary elections to select presidential candidates over the course of the next six weeks. The most interesting by far is first up: the main opposition Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC) will stage primaries on 9 December. It is against this backdrop that a representative of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur), which suspended Paraguay after the impeachment of President Fernando Lugo (2008-2012) last June, visited the country, in what looks like a step towards the normalisation of relations with Paraguay.
