The government is struggling to contain the political fallout from by
far the most serious corruption scandal since President Alan García came to
power in 2006. So far the most high-profile casualty of the scandal, which
involves alleged oil kickbacks, is the energy minister, Juan Valdivia, but it
could ensnare more government officials, including the prime minister, Jorge del
Castillo. García now has the opportunity to show he really means business when
he talks about cracking down on corruption in public life. If he fails to
convince the public then events such as the “national day of protest", which
received sporadic support on 7 October, are likely to attract more backing in
future.End of preview - This article contains approximately 960 words.
