BRAZIL: Putting the crime upsurge into perspective

As happened in the wake of the 2006 ‘uprising’ staged by the Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) in São Paulo, Brazilians have been trying to explain the reasons for and the implications of the reversal of that state’s success in lowering its violent crime rate. As then, instant reactions and conclusions have been coloured by political intent and media hype. The full picture is not yet available, but cooler-headed contributions have been helping put the situation in perspective.
