POINTERS

URUGUAY | Peak homicide rate predicted. Fundación Propuesta (FP), Uruguay’s only private crime ‘observatory’, reported on 21 November that there had been 259 homicides since the beginning of the year, already 32% more than the 196 tallied in the whole of 2011. FP said that, if the current rate is maintained, the total for this year would reach 299, equivalent to 9.19 per 100,000 inhabitants (up from 6.16 last year). Uruguay has hitherto been enjoying the lowest homicide rate in Latin America.
